Get in the Photos: A Reminder for the Parent Who Holds Everything Together

There is probably one person in your family who remembers everything.

The appointments. The school schedules. The groceries. The birthday gifts. The permission slips. The clothes everyone has outgrown. Who needs new shoes. What time practice starts. What everyone will wear for family photos.

And chances are, that same person is also the one taking most of the pictures.

If that person is you, this is your reminder: get in the photos.

You Are Part of Their Childhood, Too

As parents, especially in the busiest seasons of raising children, it can feel so much easier to stay behind the camera.

We photograph the first days of school, vacations, birthdays, Christmas mornings, soccer games and ordinary Tuesday afternoons. We want to remember them.

But someday, your children are going to look back at those photographs.

And they are going to look for you.

They won’t care that you wanted to lose ten pounds.

They won’t notice that you didn’t love your hair that day.

They won’t know that you almost rescheduled because you were exhausted, everyone was cranky, and getting four people dressed and out the door felt like an Olympic event.

They’ll just see their mom.

Their dad.

Their person.

One Day, They’ll See That You Were the Glue

Right now, your children probably don’t realize everything you do.

They don’t see all the planning happening behind the scenes. They don’t understand how many things you’re juggling or how often you’re quietly making sure everyone else has what they need before thinking about yourself.

But one day, they will.

One day, they’ll understand that you were the glue holding so much of their childhood together.

And when they look through old photographs, I want them to be able to see you there.

Not just evidence that you were there because you took the picture.

Actually there.

Your arms wrapped around them.

Their little hand tucked inside yours.

Your child laughing because of something you whispered.

The way they leaned against you without even thinking about it.

The way you looked at them when they weren’t looking at you.

Those photographs aren’t really about what you looked like.

They’re about what it felt like to belong to each other.

I’m Guilty of It, Too

I spend my career telling families how important photographs are, and yet getting updated photographs of myself sat on my own to-do list for far too long.

Because isn’t that what we do?

The things for everyone else get done first. The things for ourselves can wait.

Recently, I finally changed that and stepped onto the other side of the camera. I teamed up with another local photographer, Victoria from Victoria Vasilyeva Photography and Lumina Studio Loft. And it was a good reminder that I need to practice what I tell my clients all the time:

Don’t wait until everything is perfect.

Because perfect isn’t the part you’re going to miss.

You’re going to miss this.

This version of your children.

This version of your family.

And believe it or not, someday they are going to miss this version of you, too.

Your Children Deserve Photographs With You

We often talk about family portraits as something we’re doing for ourselves.

But I think they’re just as much for our children.

Someday, the photographs hanging on your walls will become part of their history.

They’ll remember how small they were next to you. They’ll notice how Dad always made everyone laugh. They’ll see Mom’s arms wrapped tightly around everyone. They’ll remember the dog who followed them everywhere and the little sibling who never wanted to sit still.

And years from now, those photographs will mean something completely different than they do today.

They become proof of a childhood that was loved.

So please — get in the photos.

Even if life feels busy.

Even if you don’t feel quite ready.

Even if coordinating everyone sounds overwhelming.

You don’t have to have everything figured out before booking. That’s part of what I’m here for.

Fall is one of my favorite times to photograph families in the Raleigh-Durham area. Beautiful light, changing scenery, cooler evenings and children who somehow seem to grow another inch every time we turn around.
