Summertime at the Eno River: Cooling Off & Making Memories

There is something about summer sessions at the Eno River that just feels like childhood.  Eno River family photography is an event all in itself….a memory forever imbedded in my heart.

Bare feet in the water. Dresses brushing against the riverbank. Kids splashing when they’re supposed to be posing. Families laughing together as the evening light filters through the trees.

Some of my favorite summertime sessions this year have taken place along the Eno River, and every single one has reminded me why I love photographing families here so much.

Let’s face it—summer in North Carolina is HOT.

But that doesn’t mean we have to spend the entire season hiding from the heat. The Eno River gives us the perfect opportunity to embrace summer while finding a little relief from those warm Raleigh and Durham evenings.

Once everyone steps into the cool water, the entire session seems to change. Kids relax. Shoes come off. Parents stop worrying quite so much about keeping everyo

ne perfectly clean.

And that’s usually when some of the best photographs happen.

The Eno gives us beautiful wooded trails, rocky riverbanks, lush greenery and, of course, the water itself. We can create traditional family portraits and then finish the evening with everyone dipping their toes—or sometimes a whole lot more—into the river.

Summer Photos That Feel Like Summer

One of the things I love most about river sessions is that they don’t have to feel overly posed.

Of course, I always make sure we capture the beautiful family portrait where everyone is looking at the camera. But I also want the photographs that show what this season of your family actually felt like.

I want the little hands holding yours while walking across the rocks.

The siblings splashing one another.

The wet hems.

The belly laughs.

The snuggles with Mom and Dad.

And those quiet little in-between moments that you may not even realize I’m photographing.

Years from now, those are often the images that mean the most.

The natural sce

nery at the Eno works beautifully with so many different wardrobe styles.

Keep things relaxed with bare feet, rolled jeans, linen, soft neutrals and simple summer clothing. Or take the session in an entirely different direction with flowing dresses and beautiful gowns against the rugged river landscape.

I especially love movement here. A long dress catching the breeze or floating slightly in the water can turn an ordinary summer evening into something that feels almost magical.

Saying Goodbye to Summer…and Hello to Fall

As much as I love these warm evenings at the river, summer is beginning to wind down.

And that means one of my favorite photography seasons is almost here.

As the temperatures cool, we’ll be able to venture beyond the water and start exploring even more of the beautiful locations around Raleigh and Durham.

Wooded trails. Open fields. Lakes. Parks. Downtown locations. Golden grasses. Early fall greens. And eventually, those gorgeous warm autumn colors we wait for all year.

Fall gives us so many possibilities.
