Best Locations for Beautiful Fall Colors Near Raleigh, NC

There is something about fall in North Carolina that feels a little bit magical.  Here is a simple guide to find the best location in NC for fall family photos near Raleigh.

The temperatures finally begin to cool, the light becomes softer and warmer, and our familiar green landscapes slowly transform into layers of gold, amber, orange, deep red, and even a little lingering green. For a photographer, it is one of the most beautiful times of the entire year.

And the wonderful thing about living in the Raleigh-Durham area is that you don’t have to drive to the mountains to find incredible fall color.

Some of my favorite fall portrait locations are tucked right here in the Triangle.

When Is Peak Fall Color in Raleigh, NC?

This is probably the question I hear most often when families begin planning their fall portraits.

Fall color around Raleigh tends to arrive later than many people expect. While the North Carolina mountains begin changing much earlier, the Triangle’s most beautiful color is generally found from late October through mid-to-late November.

Of course, Mother Nature never follows an exact calendar.

Temperatures, rainfall, wind, and individual varieties of trees can all affect when and how quickly the leaves change. That is actually part of what makes photographing fall here so beautiful. One location may be glowing yellow while another is filled with deep orange and red.

And sometimes the very best photographs happen when there is still a little green mixed in with all that gorgeous autumn color.

Brightleaf at the Park Nature Trail | Durham, NC

One of my absolute favorite hidden gems for fall portraits is Brightleaf Nature Trail in Durham for fall family photos Raleigh NC

This is not a huge destination park. It is a beautiful neighborhood nature trail tucked inside the Brightleaf at the Park area—and that is part of what makes it so special.

In the fall, the wooded trail can become absolutely covered in color.

Golden leaves overhead, warm tones along the pathway, fallen leaves underfoot, and gorgeous pockets of light filtering through the trees create the perfect backdrop for family portraits.

I especially love this location for families with young children. We don’t need elaborate scenery or props. The colorful woods do all the work for us.

Children can snuggle together, explore, laugh, and simply be themselves while I photograph those little connections in between.

And can we talk about how beautiful emerald green looks against those glowing orange and gold leaves? It is one of my favorite wardrobe combinations for late-fall sessions.

Brightleaf is a wonderful example of why some of the most beautiful photography locations aren’t necessarily the most famous ones.

Falls Lake | Raleigh & Durham, NC

If you want fall color AND water, Falls Lake State Recreation Area is hard to beat.

Falls Lake gives us so much variety in one location: wooded trails, lake views, open shoreline, reflections on the water, tall trees, and beautiful evening light.

North Carolina State Parks even features photographs of the fall color around Falls Lake, including the Rolling View and Beaverdam areas.

For family photography, I especially love the way the autumn trees reflect across the lake. On a calm evening, we can have fall color surrounding your family and reflected behind you.

It creates an entirely different look from a traditional wooded fall session.

Falls Lake is also beautiful for families who want photographs that feel a little more relaxed and natural. Long dresses, earthy neutrals, mustard, rust, cream, olive, brown, and warm floral prints all photograph beautifully here.

And yes—your four-legged family members can often join us, too. Pets are permitted in the state recreation area when following park leash rules, although they are not allowed on swimming beaches.

There is just something timeless about a family standing together beside the water with autumn glowing behind them.

North Carolina Museum of Art | Raleigh, NC

For a completely different fall look, the North Carolina Museum of Art Museum Park is one of Raleigh’s most recognizable outdoor locations for beautiful fall family photos near Raleigh NC.

The Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park encompasses 164 acres and includes trails, contemporary gardens, native landscapes, a pond, and outdoor art installations.

That variety is exactly what makes it so wonderful for portraits.

Rather than photographing in only one little area, we can create several completely different looks during a session. There are open spaces, pathways, trees, tall grasses and wonderful opportunities for that dreamy backlit sunset glow.

During fall, those natural elements take on warmer tones that photograph beautifully.

I especially love NCMA for families who want their fall portraits to feel a little more modern, airy and editorial rather than completely woodland-inspired.

It is also a wonderful location for older children, teenagers, seniors, and families who want a little more movement in their session.

Eno River | Durham, NC

Oh, the Eno.

If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you probably already know how much I love photographing families near the river.

Eno River Pleasant Green Access and the surrounding Eno River area offer an entirely different type of natural beauty.

Think rocky riverbanks, winding trails, trees arching overhead, water sparkling in the background and sunlight filtering through the woods.

Eno River State Park stretches across multiple access areas along the river in Durham and Orange counties, creating a wonderful mix of forest and river landscapes.

During autumn, all of those elements come together beautifully.

The warm leaves contrast against the cooler tones of the river and rocks, while late-day sunlight creates gorgeous golden highlights through the trees.

This is one of my favorite locations for families who want photographs that feel a little adventurous and organic.

Bare feet near the water, kids exploring the rocks, parents holding hands, little ones being scooped up for a hug—those are the moments that make river sessions so special.

Please note: Eno River State Park has experienced closures and access changes, and some areas remain affected, so current trail and access conditions should always be checked when planning a visit.

Which Fall Photo Location Is Best for Your Family?

That’s one of the things I love most about planning custom family portraits.

There isn’t one “best” location for everyone.

If you want deep woods and incredible leaves, I may recommend Brightleaf.

If you love water, reflections and big landscapes, Falls Lake may be perfect.

If you envision open spaces, tall grasses and a more polished Raleigh feel, NCMA might be the right choice.

And if your family loves nature, rocks, water and a little adventure, the Eno River is hard to beat.

Your location should complement your family—not the other way around.

What Should You Wear for Fall Family Photos?

Fall gives us such a beautiful color palette to work with.

Instead of trying to match everyone exactly, I recommend choosing colors that coordinate with one another and with the landscape.

Cream, camel, rust, deep green, burgundy, mustard, chocolate brown, navy, soft beige and warm florals are all beautiful choices. Texture also photographs wonderfully in autumn—think knits, velvet, corduroy, lace, layered dresses and cozy sweaters.

But don’t be afraid of color.

A gorgeous red dress or rich emerald green can look absolutely spectacular against golden fall foliage.

The goal is to create a wardrobe that feels cohesive while still allowing every member of your family to look like themselves.
