There’s something magical about early summer in Raleigh. As the hydrangeas burst into bloom, the WRAL Hydrangea Gardens become one of the most beautiful places to preserve this season of life. Soft blue, lavender, pink, and white blooms line the winding pathways, creating the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits filled with warmth, connection, and joy.
These recent sessions reminded me why the WRAL Gardens remain one of my favorite locations every single year. The gardens offer a peaceful setting where children can simply be themselves, parents can slow down for a moment, and families can create beautiful memories together.
Why I Love Photographing Families at WRAL Hydrangea Gardens
One of the things that makes the WRAL Gardens so special is the incredible variety.
During one session we may photograph among towering blue hydrangeas, while just a short walk away colorful flower beds, winding brick paths, towering trees, and beautiful filtered sunlight create an entirely different look.

Photographing Children Naturally in the WRAL Hydrangea Gardens
Some of my favorite moments from these sessions weren’t perfectly posed.
They happened between poses.

Those little moments often become parents’ favorite images because they capture who their children truly are in this season of life.
Rather than expecting children to sit perfectly still, I gently guide them while allowing plenty of room for personality to shine through.
