Tips for Keeping Kids Safe in the Sun

As the weather warms up and kids are eager to spend time outdoors, it’s important to keep them safe from the sun’s harmful rays. Here are some essential tips to ensure your children enjoy the sun safely.

1. Apply Sunscreen Regularly

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, ears, and tops of feet. Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

2. Wear Protective Clothing

Dress your kids in lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat to protect their face, neck, and ears.

3. Seek Shade

Encourage play in shaded areas, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest. Use umbrellas, tents, or canopies to create shaded spots.

4. Wear Sunglasses

Protect your children’s eyes with sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Look for wraparound styles that provide maximum coverage.

5. Stay Hydrated

Make sure your kids drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Offer water regularly, even if they don’t feel thirsty.

6. Be Sun-Smart with Infants

Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight. Use stroller shades and dress them in protective clothing. If necessary, apply a small amount of sunscreen to exposed areas.

7. Lead by Example

Kids learn by watching adults. Show them how to be sun-smart by wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, and seeking shade yourself.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your children enjoy the sun safely and reduce their risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
